Foreign investment situation in 2018
According to report of the Foreign Investment Agency (FIA) - Ministry of Planning and Investment, foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2018, there were 3,046 newly-registered projects with capital reached US$ 18 billion, equal to 84.5% with the same period of last year, the additional registered capital reached US$ 7.59 billion, equal to 90.3% with the same period of last year.
By sectors: The processing, manufacturing sector continues to rank 1stwith the total registered investment capital of US$ 16.58 billion, accounting for 46.7% of the registered capital, The real estate sector ranked 2nd with US$ 6.6 billion, accounting for 18.6% of the registered capital, andThe Wholesale, retail, repair sectorranked 3rdwith US$ 3.67 billion, accounting for 10.3% of the registered capital.
By partners: There were112 countries and territories investing in 2018, Japan retained its position as Viet Nam’s leading source of FDI withUS$ 8.59 billion, accounting for 24.2%; followed by the Republic of Korea with aboutUS$ 7.2 billion, accounting for 20.3%; and Singapore with US$ 5 billion, accounting for 14.2%.
By areas:Among 59 localities, the capital city Ha Noi lured the largest FDI in 2018, with $ 7.5 billion, accounting for 21.2% of the total FDI registered in the country. Ho Chi Minh city and Hai Phong were the runners-up with $5.9 billion or 16.7% and $ 3.1 billion or 8.7%, respectively.

There were 23 countries and territories investing into Central Vietnamin 2018, led by the Republic of Koreawith 71 new projects and total registered investment capital of US$ 424.25 million (accounting for 35.4%), the second was Japan with the total registered investment capital of US$ 398.55 million.

In 2018, The processing and manufacturingsector retained its position as Central region’s leading source of FDI with 53 new projects and registered investment capital of US$ 853.86million, accounting for 71.24% of total registered capital, the production and distribution of electric, gas, waterranked 2nd with 3 new projects and registered investment capital of US$ 173.3 million, accounting for 14.46% of total registered capital and the warehouse transportation sectorstood at the third.

From 1988 to 2018, up to now this region has attracted 1392 FDI projects with total registered capital of over US$ 24.23 billion, accounting for 5.09% of the number of projects and 7.13% of the registered capital as compared with the whole country. Among them, Central Key Economic Zone has attracted 1063 projects with total registered capital of over US$ 17.23 billion (71.07% of the whole region).
