According to FDI Report 2019 published by the Foreign Investment Agency, Vietnam had 3,883 newly - granted FDI projects, a 27.5 percent increase over the previous year, with a total newly registered capital of USD 16.75 billion. However, the Central Highlands region (including 05 provinces) contributed only 04 projects among them, with a total newly registered capital of less than USD 10 million.
FDI Inflows in the Region
Investment Reports 2019 by regional provinces outline reality of FDI attraction in this region. Kon Tum has 09 valid FDI projects with a total registered capital of VND 1,687.38 billion by the end of 2019. In Gia Lai province, there are 05 valid FDI projects of 02 companies and 03 branches, with a total registered capital of VND 255 billion. Dak Lak didn’t have any newly granted FDI projects in 2019, besides 16 ones in operation. Last year, Dak Nong People's Committee approved investment policies and granted investment certificates for 13 non-state projects with a total registered capital of VND 293 billion, but none of these are FDI projects. Lam Dong, with more advantages, is considered a key FDI destination in this area. In 2019, it granted investment registration certificates for 03 FDI projects, with a registered capital of VND 209.37 billion and an area of 6.14 ha. Accumulated to the end of 2019, Lam Dong has had 103 valid FDI projects with a total registered capital of USD 520 million.

The authorities of the regional provinces have made a lot of efforts in investment promotion programs and activities. Many big investment events held last year while investment aftercare services have been provided. About VND 71,000 billion of investment commitments were made at the event Dak Lak Investment Promotion Conference 2019. Dak Nong received nearly VND 2,500 billion in investment commitments from various companies at Dak Nong Investment Promotion Conference 2019. The Japan Desk of Lam Dong was established to assist Japanese businesses and investors during their investments in the province.

There are opportunities for investment in renewable energy (wind power, solar power), urban development, infrastructure, ecotourism, resorts, high-tech agriculture, forestry, agricultural and pharmaceutical processing industry and ICT in this region.
Central Highlands region will host its fifth Central Highlands Investment Conference at the end of this year. The fifth Investment Conference, which will take place in Kon Tum province, will provide a platform to showcase new investment opportunities in the region. Building on the success of the previous conferences, the fifth Investment Conference is a platform to unlock investment opportunities for both domestic and international businesses. The conference is part of a long-term action plan to grow the Central Highlands economy.
